In ancient times, the present Achham was known as "Naukhwa", which means nine sections. At that time, Achham was divided into nine different sections and small kingdoms were operating. During the unification of Nepal, Achham was ruled by the Palas before the Naga-king Mallas ruled in the Karnali Province. After that, civilization developed in Achham during the rule of the Mallas. After that, as their power waned, small kingdoms emerged in the Karnali and Gandaki provinces, and Achham was also established as an independent Hindu kingdom.
